1.Kitami Mint Memorial Museum/Distillery

The Kitami Mint Memorial Museum is a museum where visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the Japanese peppermint industry, which is an integral part of the history of Kitami City. It has also been recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization of Japan.

2. Okhotsk Beer Factory

This is a factory-operated restaurant where you can enjoy Japan’s first Okhotsk beer. In addition to beer, you can also enjoy Kitami Gourmet Salted Yakisoba Noodles, which pairs well with with beer.

3. Pearson Memorial Hall

The Pearson Memorial Hall is the mansion where Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, American missionaries, lived until they returned to the United States.

4. Argo Graphics Kitami Curling Hall

Argo Graphics Kitami Curling Hall is a place where the general public, various curling classes, sightseeing experiences, and other non-curling activities can be enjoyed.

The tower was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the former Tokoro Town in 1988, therefore number 100 is intertwined with various places, such as 100 meters from sea level and 100 steps inside the tower.

An aquarium in Kitami City. The aquarium keeps 20 of Japan’s largest freshwater fish itou, or Japanese huchen or stringfish, a fish which is the dream of anglers! Visitors can catch a glimpse of the life of these fish as they survive the cold and harsh environment unique to Hokkaido.

8. The world’s largest mechanical cuckoo clock “Roadside Station Onneyu Onsen”

The roadside station “Onneyu Onsen” has one of the world’s largest cuckoo clocks, and both children and adults can enjoy the wooden playground.

This festival is held in conjunction with the blooming of the Ezomurasaki azaleas that grow in clusters on the azalea mountain near the roadside station Onneyu Onsen. When the number of Ezomurasaki azaleas grows to 280,000, it looks like a purple carpet, creating a fantastic beautiful landscape.

This festival is held at the cherry blossom park of Kamitokoro Kotohira Shrine, which is famous for its cherry blossoms. A fair will be held so that visitors can enjoy food while taking in the magnificent view of the Ezo-Yamazakura cherry trees blooming all over the mountain. With around 650 cherry trees in full bloom, it is truly a beautiful sight to behold.

Lake Saroma 100km Ultra Marathon

A marathon that runs around Lake Saroma facing the Sea of Okhotsk in Hokkaido. There are 100km and 50km divisions, and those who complete the 100km division more than 10 times are given the title of “Saloman Blue,” and those who complete the race 20 times or more are awarded the title “Grand Blue.”

This festival is held to give thanks to the god of hot springs, and has a history of over 70 years. A group of 100 people energetically carry a mikoshi, a portable shrine, along the Mukagawa River, and visitors can enjoy the frenzy of this exciting festival.

This is a 3-day festival where Kitami’s citizens can participate. In the morning, the area is crowded with festivals for children, and in the evening there are many events such as a dance parade and the Tonden Grand Tug of War, where people play tug of war in the traditional loincloths.

Since 2000, Kitami City has held the “Kitami Cold Yakiniku Festival” every year, taking advantage of the extremely cold environment. Eating yakiniku, grilled meat, in a harsh environment where the outside temperature ranges from 0 to -20 degrees is a truly thrilling experience!
